What BMI actually tells you
BMI is a population-level screening number, not a diagnosis. It ignores muscle mass, bone density, and where you carry fat — which is why a lean, muscular lifter and someone carrying significant fat can land on the same number. Treat it as one input among several, alongside waist measurement and how your training and energy actually feel.
Common questions
- What is a healthy BMI?
- 18.5 to 24.9 is the range usually described as healthy weight. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese.
- Is BMI accurate for muscular people?
- No. BMI only uses height and weight, so it cannot tell muscle from fat. A lifter with plenty of muscle can read as overweight while carrying very little body fat. Use it as a rough screen, not a verdict.
- How is BMI calculated?
- Metric: weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. Imperial: weight in pounds divided by height in inches squared, multiplied by 703.
